“UNSANITARY AND AN EYESORE”

REQUEST FOR DEMOLITION THE BOROUGH COMMITTEE. The old infant school was not sanitary and Avas an eyesore, said Mr L. W. Christmas, speaking for the Visiting 'Committee at a meeting of the Borough School Committee last evening. He stressed that something ought to he done about 1 it and pressure ought to be brought to bear on the* Canterbury Education Board. It Avas resolved to Avrite to the Board asking that the old building be demolished and the roofing iron used in the erection of a fence near the dental clinic and model school.

The chairman (Mr W. H. Sarney) presided, and there were present Messrs Christmas, N .Milner, and A. E. Gill. Mr Christmas also referred to the dangerous state of the broken-doA\ T n, rusty, barbed-Avire fence near the model school and dental clinic and pointed out the possibility of children running through a gap into a vehicle on the road.

It Avas decided to ask that roofingiron from the old infant school he reserved for erecting a fence. The asphalt near the infant-room Avas in an unsatisfactory condition and some of the sumps Avere blocked Avith colfix,. continued Mr Christmas. Two elms which had been planted in a part of the grounds a feAV years ago Avere dying and required shifting to a more favourable spot. Drinking facilities were not adequate and a drinking trough Avas needed. When other parts of the school had received a coat of paint the model school had not been attended*to, apd Avas in need of a coat. It was resolved:

(1) That the * Education Board be written to stating that the asphalt in front of the new infant school requires levelling and topdressing as Avater ac cumulates on it ■ (2) That in. view of the repeated requests to haye the sumps cleaned of colfix and the downpipes connected Avith the sumps, the Board be asked to give the committee the necessary authority to have the Avork done immediately at the Board’s expense; (3) That application be made to the Board for additional accommodation for the supply of extra drinking Avater (i.e., ( water troughs); (4) That the Board be thanked for painting done at the school and'that a request be made that it consider the painting of the model school, Avhich had evidently been previously overlooked." Messrs Christinas and Milner Avere appointed Visiting Committee for the next meeting. It was decided to hold the break-up ceremony op Thursday, Decemoer 39, the dux medals being given as usual. Authority was given to bring the honours’ boards up to date when the required information is available. Headmaster’s Report. The headmaster (Mr M. J. Leith) reported that the average number on the roll for the mouth was 434.2. The average attendance was 404.32. The present roll number was 436. Mr G. G. Leith had left the school, having offered his services to the Navy and having been instructed toi proceed to' Auckland University for a short period of preliminary training. Miss M. Cody had been transferred to the school as probationary assistant. It Avas intended to hold Parents’ Day on Friday, December 13. Miss Cruickshank suggested that the infants’ party be held' on the same day. Education Board Avorkmen Avere doing minor repairs.

In connection with the minor work hieing carried out, a letter was received from the Education Board advising that instructions had been given for the double-gates to be repaired, and painted and also for the stile to be painted. Approval had been given for the renovation, of the staff-room and the repairing of the sink bench. Appreciation of the services to the school of Miv G. G. Leith Avas recorded and it Avas decided that a letter be sent to him expressing the committee’s appreciation of his offering his services to the Navy, and best wishes for a speedy return. It Avas decided' to grant the Home Guard use of the. school grounds on condition, that they be responsible for any damage.
