FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

Gale at Wellington—A violent northerly gale set in yesterday afternoon and evening, followed by rain. Some damage was done to small craft in the harbour, and the 'German man-of-war, Leipzig, dragged her anchor slightly. Considerable damage was done on shore to gardens, the contents of which were destroyed in all directions. It is still (11.20 a.qi.) raining and blowing hard. Gold Discovery—A rich belt of auriferous country has been proved on Umfali Rivier, South Africa.
The Commander—Prince Edward of Saxi, Weimar, the German ..who .commands the British Army in Ireland, weighs 3081 b. It is hjyrd to find a horse to carry him with any grace or comfort.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

In Serbia —Athens cables state. 125,000 Fran,co-British troops have landed at Salonika, abundantly supplied, and 45,000 additional are en route. There arc 4000 landing daily. War in the Air —Paris: A communique states that four German aeroplanes bombed Verdun, but did little damage. Five French aeroplanes, by way of reprisal, dropped 20 bombs on the railway station at BrieuUes, south of Stenay, arid cut up the line. A train hurriedly turned 'back. '1 Old Boy Gains Aiw'ard —It was reported at the Ashburton High School Board meeting to-day that Lieutenant W. O. Berryman, of the Ist Royal Dragoon Guards, an old hoy of the school, had been awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry in carrying out a reconnaissance in France.
