Refrigerating Company.—The annual report of the South Canterbury Refrigerating Company states that 86,035 sheep and lambs were frozen during the year. A dividend of 8 per cent was declared, and £6745 carried forward. On starting the new works in September the charge for freezing was reduced to 3 l-Bd. The enlarged works require an output of 200,000 to pay as well as the original works. Immense Whale. Gisborne: The steamer Southern Cross, on her voyage from Auckland sighted what appeared to be a vessel bottom upwards. Steaming up to it, it, was found to be an immense whale. The Natives of Taparoa eventually secured the fish, which was of prodigious size.-
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO.

Patriotic Effort at Lauriston.—The Ashburton Patriotic Troubadours gave another of their popular concerts at Lauriston last evening before a large and enthusiastic audience. The Troubadours gave their usual programme, with innovations in the form of local hits, which on several- occasions, brought down the house. In the interval a Union Jack, presented, by Mr Peter Drummond, ‘‘Senr., was auctioned by Mr J. R. Brown, and realised the sum of £499, after being knocked down to nearly everyone in the hall. The donor finally purchased the flag. A variety auction was also conducted, - when a cow, a lamb, a cushion and a picture were sold, bringing to the total received from auction sales to £522. Mr J. R. Brown also gave a stirring patriotic address. It is expected that over £550 will be realised as the result of the entertainment. *
