FIRST PARADE.

ASHBURTON HOME GUARD. ENROLMENTS: ARE, 140 AT NOON. With the first parade of the Home Guard in the Borough this evening interest in the organisation is increasing and up to noon to-day the Ashburton Borough Council office had received 140 'enrolments, an increase of 17 since yesterday morning. The first payade will take place at the Drill Hall at 7.30 this evening. The Area Commander (Captain E. A. Cockroft), the Mayor (Dr. J. Connor) and Major El. H. Orr who has been recommended as local commander will be present. Enrolments will be made, members will bo sworn in, and something of the functions of the Guard will be explained to those uresent.

PARADE AT STAVELEY.

LIEUT. MELARSi TO COMMAND. The Staveley Home Guard held its first parade last evening, with an attendance of 40. At least- 30 mort? are expected to join this unit. Lieutenant J. Wears has been recommended: as the local Commanded. Lieutenant Mears’ war experience was extensive while serving with the Imperial Forces.

GREAT INTEREST AT CAREW. "

TWENTY-ONE MEMBERS ENROLLED.

Residents of the Carew district who met at the No. 2 Public Works Department Camp at Clement’s Corner last evening, unanimously decided to form a Home G dat'd Committee. Mr H. 0. B. Withell presided. The meeting was addressed by Mr Withell, Captain E. A. Cockroft (the Area Commander) and Mr G. Kelly (County Clerk), who, explained the yules, and other matters in connection with the Guard. After a. full discussion in which various doubts were cleared up the following committee was appointed: Messrs H. C. Barton. D. Seammell, 'J. M. Bergin, R. Sedgwick, E. J. Banks, D. Brown, T. D. Scott, W. M. Miller, J. F. Westphall, 0. D. Riddell,, A. D. Cameron, K. H. Swain. The committee subsequently appointed Mr Bergin. chairman and Mr Seammell secretary.

Twenty-one enrolments took place and it is anticipated that at least two platoons can be organised in the district.
