GRAIN AND PRODUCE. SOUTH CANTERBURY MARKET. TIMARU, This Day. There are still inquiries for forward oats on the South Canterbury grain and produce market, but owing to the drying winds during the last two to three weeks the price has firmed a little. B Gartons are now quoted at 3s 5d a bushel f.0.b., s.i., for AprilSeptember crops. There have been heavier sowings of wheat this year, which is fortunate, as present indications are that the Australian crop will be considerably reduced owing to the drought. Odd inquiries are still being received for A and B Gartons. A’s are qupted at 4s a bushel on trucks and B’s at 3s 4d.
Occasional inquiries are being received for chaff and nominal quotations are now at £4 17s 6d a ton on trucks.
Nominal quotations for peas remain at 6s 6d a bushel on trucks.
New potatoes are coming forward freely on the North Island market and there is no demand for South Island potatoes. ■ Further Government inquiries from the North Island have been received for certified seed, but prices remain unchanged _as follows: Pedigree ryegrass 24s a bushel, mother ryegrass 14s Gd a bushel, commercial ryegrass 13s, white clover 2s 8d a lb, Montgomery (permanent pasture)/ 3s Idy cowgrass, (farmers’ dressed) Is Id, Italian rye* grass (machine dressed) 8s 3d.a bushel.
The Avondale Jockey Club will hold its second spring meeting to-morrow. Excellent acceptances have been received and some good racing should’ result.
