DECREASE IN WHEAT AREA.

The area under wheat for 1940-41 is estimated by the Census and Statistics Department to be 244.000 acres. . .1 hj s estimate is published in to-night s Gazette, together with the area loi the 1939-40 season, which is placed at 258,672 acres. The 1940-41. crop, therefore, is expected to be smaller by more than 14,000 acres. The area of oats harvested in 1939-10 was 212,498 acres, and the estimated area for 1940-41 is 297,000 acres, giving an increase of more than 84,000 acres. The estimated area of barley in 194041 also shows' a substantial increase at 40.200 acres, the area in 1939-40 being 25,786 acres. The area in potatoes is expected to be 2000 acres, smaller at 18,000 acres against 20,033 acres in 1939-40.
