CONTEST POSTPONED.

PROVINCIAL BANDS’ FIXTURE. PROBABLE EARLY NEXT YEAR.. Because of a lack of support from other Canterbury Silver Bands, the committee of the Ashburton Silver Band decided last evening to postpone till early next year the provincial solo and quartette contest that was to have been held at Ashburton -on Saturday, November 23. for the- Canterbury Pro vincial Bands’ Association. March was suggested as a date for the contest. Mr F. Turner (president- of the Canterbury Provincial Bands’ Association) visited Ashburton last evening to discuss the matter with, the local authorities.

It was felt that as neither the Timaru or Woolston Bands would promise support to the contest if held would not be a truss provincial championship. Arrangements are, however, progressing well for the visit of the Sc Kilda Band during the King’s Birthday week-end. The visitors will arrive on the Saturday and will probably’ present a. concert in the evening. On Sunday they will play in. the Domain in the. afternoon!, and will take part in the unveiling of the Centennial sundial scheduled for this date. The Band has also expressed its willingness to talaa part in. the usual 'Salvation Army Band Church Parade. A furthen* concert is being planned for the island on the lake in the Domain for Sunday evening, if satisfactory lighting arrangements can be made. Tills Band will leave for Dunedin on Monday.
