OUTSTANDING DETERMINATION
WELLINGTON, October 31
Details from the notice awarding a bar to the Distinguished Flying Cross to Flight. Lieutenant Alan Christopher Deere, of "Wanganui, have been received by Air Headquarters, "Wellington. Flight Lieutenant Deere was awarded the D.F.C. in June and the bar in August, being the first New Zealander to achieve this distinction {luring the present war. The second New Zealander to receive a bar to the D.F.C. is Flying Officer Brian John George Carbury, of "Wellington, the award being announced a few days ago. The notice concerning Flight Lieutenant Deere states: “Since the out break of war to August, 1940, this officer has personally destroyed eleven and probably one other enemy aircraft and has assisted in the destruction of two more. In addition to the skill and gallantry he has shown in leading his flight, and, in many instances, his squadron, Flight Lieutenant Deere has displayed conspicuous brayery and determination in pressing home attacks against superior numbers of enemy aircraft, often pursuing them across the Channel to shoot them down. As a leader he has shown outstanding dash and determination.”
