LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,”’ Nov. 1890) Show Luncheon. After a diearty luncheon had been partaken of, under the care and attention of Miss Essie Butler, the president, Mr D. Thomas, proposed the loyal and patriotic toasts, which were heartily responded to, ancl after Major Steward had acknowledged “Parliament Past,” and Mr Purnell, “Parliament Future,” the president gave “The Judges,” to which, Messrs Gould and Haydon replied, the latter stating that the sheep, both pure and crossbred, would compare with the .best in the colony. Mr W. Studholme proposed “the Marshals,” to which Mr Duncan Cameron replied. “The Exhibitors,” was proposed by Mr Leadley, who dwelt upon the particular excellence of the horses shown, which would compare with any in the colony. Mr J. C. N. Grigg responded, and proposed the toast of the “Press.”
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 1, 1915). Reception at.. Hinds.—Between 300 and 400 people were assembled on the Hinds Railway Station on Sunday evening to meet the train which carried tho men, who returned from the war on the "Willochra. Three cheers were given for the returning troopers. After the train had left Troopers Hampton and Noble were formally welcomed by Mr J. Farrell (acting chairman of the Hinds Patriotic Committee). The returning troopers were then conveyed to their homes in motorcars. A more elaborate welcome home will be extended at a future date, when the troopers have seen their friends and have rested sufficiently. Mounted Rifles.— A parade of tho men of the B Squadron Bth (South Canterbury) Mounted Rifles was held at St. Stephen’s Church yesterday. The men, 60 strong, under Major Bond, and Lieutenants Day, Doherty, and Stevens, and ; Lieutenant-Quarter-master Christian, marched up from the camp for the sei’vice. The camp broke up to-day after a successful week’s outing. ■
