WARM AND SUNNY TO-DAY.

Warm and sunny weather prevailed in Ashburton; to-day. A light northwest wind was also blowing.

The maximum and minimum temperatures yesterday were 67.2 and 41 degrees respectively, compared with 66.8 and 40.5 degrees on Wednesday •The .barometer stood at 29.94 inches this morning, having (risen from 29.84 inches yesterday.

CONDITIONS DURING OCTOBER.

October has been a fairly warm month, conditions being partly cloudy and partly sunny, with a comparatively light fall of rain. The main feature was the severe north-west gales of the last few days, described in scone parts of the County as being the heaviest for years. In the country districts particularly considerable damage was done to telephone and electric power lines, trees and even to buildings. The highest temperature for the month was 78.2 degrees on October 16 and the 70 degree mark was exceeded on seven occasions. In October of last year the highest reading was 70 degrees. The maximum temperatures varied between 31.5 and 50.1 degrees, compared with 31.8 and 52.3 last year. The rainfall was light, only 113 points being recorded at the Domain weather station. This fall is, however, heavier that in the corresponding month of last year when 98 points were registered. The heaviest fall on any one day was 69 points on the 7th. The barometer was as low as 29.1 inches on October 1, and as high as 30.10 on the 4th.

THE MONTH AT METHVEN. Rain fell on 13 days during October at Methven, states a report forwarded by Mr J. Carr, “Rudstom?.” The total was 3.30 inches compared with 1.71 last year. The heaviest fall on one day Was 1.31 inches on the 7th. The highest value of the barometei was 1023.4 millibars and the lowest 090.3. The highest maximum temperature was 73.2 degrees on the 22nd compared with 68.4 last October. There were frosts on 13 nights white there were 16 last year. The sun stone for 198.2' hours against 206.7 hours in the corresponding period of 1939.

TO-DAY’S FORECAST. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather: — An extensive anti-cyclone is centred over New Zealand while a. deep depression. is located south of Tasmania. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Moderate north-easterly winds prevailing and freshening on the coast during the day. Weather fair to fine and mild. Seas slight.
