SOLDIERS’ PARCELS.

THE PURCHASE OF CONTENTS. VIEW OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. A motion passed at the half-yearly meeting of the Council of the MidCanterbury Federation of the Women’s Institute, disapproving of the fact that the contents of soldiers’ parcels are bought outside the Ashburton County, was received by the County Council at its meeting to-day. The secretary (Mrs G. M. Breeze) staged in a letter that they would he prepared to assist with the packing of the parcels. The County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) said that to pack the parcels locally would bo a very big undertaking. The Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council had decided to buy the contents of the ( parcels in bulk, thus saving a considerable amount of money. Further, such articles as plum puddings, tins and special packing eases would he difficult to procure locally. The chairman (Mr 8. P. Taylor) said the County was already doing a big patriotic service. The present system seemed to bo working satisfactorily.

Mr J. Carr asked whether Methven, Mayfield and Rakaia would also want the contents of parcels purchased in their districts. It was stated that the enthusiasm of the women of the County was appreciated. It was left to the Chairman and County Clerk to confer with the women, pointing out the ICouncil’s views.
