ENORMOUS DAMAGE.
GEESE Q 4 THE BACK COUNTRY.
QUESTION OF THEIR. DESTRUCTION.
In a letter received by the Council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society last evening Mr R. C. Todhunter, of Blackford, wrote that Canadian geese had increased very greatly in the back-country in recent years, and were doing an enormous amount of damage. In reply to the Society’s suggestion that the Government should be asked to lift the protection from these birds, Mr Todhunter said that runholders would them be faced with the danger of indiscriminate shooting over their properties, which in the past had proved very troublesome especially at mustering and lambing time. He suggested that some scheme should be worked out by the'Department of Lands and the Department of Internal Affairs, which would lead to the destruction of geese in areas where they had become a nuisance, without the disturbance of other geese and stock. It was decided to bring this matter forward for discussion at the annual conference of thei South Island Acclimatisation Societies.
