GRAM AND PRODUCE. THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Ashburton grain, seed, and produce fnerchants report a quieter period on the local market. Occasional orders are being received for feed oats and chaff, but the volume of business is small. Odd sales of ryegrass and clover have been made to the North Island. Good retail business is reported in ryegrass, clover, rape and turnip seeds.

An occasional order is coming to hand for Partridge peas for seed purposes, but sowing is practically completed. The following are prices quoted to farmers, on trucks at country stations unless otherwise indicated, sacks extra, free of commission:— Wheat —-. Milling, f.0.b., Tuscan

The Egg Market. Prices on the Ashburton egg market remain unchanged—buying Is Id, selling Is 3d. THE STOCK SALES. ADDINGTON. CHRISTCHURCH, October 30. Substantially smaller entries in the main sections of stock were forward at to-day’s weekly Addington market. This, combined with an increased demand, in view of the forthcoming holiday, resulted in an improvement in prices for fat cattle, fat wethers, spring lambs and porkers. A total of 300 spring lambs was penned and sold keenly at from lljd to Is per lb. There was a small entry of store sheep, mostly ewes and lambs. Sound-mouth ewes with an average percentage of lambs sold from 19s to 20s 6d for best, and down to 16s 6d all counted. No good hoggets wore forward. About 4000 fat sheep were penned and all but a few pens of owes were shorn. There was a good sale for wethers, with little improvement in values, and shorn ewes were unchanged. There is a sharp disparity in the price of shorn and woolly sheep. Good shorn wethers made from 36s to 395, a few tops to 425; prime medium 33s 6d to 35s 6d, light down to 255; best shorn owes from 31s to 35s lOd, good medium-weight 27s to 295, light down to 19s. About 420 fat cattle wore penned, and there was a recovery for good quality of about 20s a head. Best steers made from £2O to £24 7s 6d for tops, good medium weights £l7 to £lB, and light down to £11; best heifers £l4 to £l6, tops to £lB 7s 6d, medium £l2 to £l3 10s; best cows £l3 to £ls, medium to £8 10s; best beef from 48s to 51s per 1001 b, medium from 44s to 46s 6d, secondary down to 40s. There was an average-sized yarding of store cattle penned, hut there was not’much merit in it. However, for the better class lines there was a free sale and at satisfactory prices considering condition. A pen of three-year mixed coloured -steers in fairly forward condition sold at £lO Is, and a pen of 3-4-year steers, Shorthorn cross, also in fair to good order, at the same pi ice. Black Poll cows sold at £7 8s 6d; Friesian cross heifers, 15 months old, sold at £5 and £3 19s. Cows for grazing met with a free demand, -one pen m fairly forward order selling -at £7 2s, others at £6 4s, and backward-condi-tioned sorts at from £4 to £5 18s 6d. Both porkers and good averageweight baconers ‘sold well. Porkers made from 53s 6d to £3 9s 6d (average 7d to 7-id lb), pork baconers £3 9s 6d to £4 12s 6d (6Jd to 7-Jd). There was a full entry in the stove pig section, some excellent types being penned. The demand for large stores was exceedingly keen and a good line from the West Coast made from 48s to 59s 6d. Values were: Small weaners 18s to 21s, medium 22s to 255, best to 325; slips 31s to 345; small stores 38s to 425, medium 43s to 48s, large to 525, extra large to 59s 6d. Sales ef County Clients. ply. Several pens of prime heifers were included in the entry. The sale opened firm at la.st sale rates and improved to tlio extent of 10s to 15s a head for all classes with the exception of heavy bullocks and heavy cows, which sold at prices generally lower than late rates. Extra primd heavy bullocks made to £26 12s 6d, prime heavy £2O 12s 6d to £24 7s 6d, prime medium £l7 12s 6d to £l9 17s 6d, and medium £l3 17s 6d to £ls 2s 6d. Prime heavy cows and heifers made to £ls 2s 6d, prime medium £lO 2s 6(1 to £l4 7s 6d and light from £8 7s 6d. Included in the entry of 100 head of store cattle, yarded were several pens of station bullocks. The sale was easier to the. extent of 10s a head for bullocks. Vealers were in short supply and sold at high rates. Store cows and honors sold at late rates. Three- and four-year steers brought from £B. An entry of 30 dairy cows was penned and any good young cows met with a ready sale. Up to £lO 5s was realised for good sorts close to profit.

A medium entry of 1440 fat sheep was forward, the bulk comprising prime quality ewes with a smaller proportion of wethers than usual. Hoggets were in short supply. The number of shorn sheep penned was larger than that of late sales. The sale was a free one, with- prices for wethers up in value to the extent of’ Is 6d a head. Prime medium ewes sold at Is advance. Heavy woolly ewes made to 46s 9d, prime 40s to 43s 3d, and light from 32s 6d; extra prime heavy shorn wethers to 39s 9d, prime 33s to 36s 3d, and light from 30s; prime woolly young ewes to 40s 6d, prime 34s 6d to 36s 9d, medium 30s to '33s, and light from 245; prime young shorn ewes to 33s 9d, prime shorn 27s to 30s, medium 21s to 245, and light from 17s. An entry of 115 fat lambs was forward. Quality was very good, with prices firm to a shade dearer. The yarding of fat pigs totalled 115. Porker pigs met with a very firm sale, showing an increase of 3s a head on last week’s rates. Bacon pigs sold keenly throughout the sale, and prices remained firm on last week’s rates.

A largo yarding of store pigs sold very keenly, store pigs making to 52s 6d and suckers to 355.
