SURPRISE ATTACK.
ITALIAN OUTPOST ROUTED. ENGAGEMENT IN THE DESERT. LONDON, October 30. Taking completely by surprise a strong Italian outpost, including many mechanised vehicles guarding a concentration of supply vessels off the coast, a. British detachment of artillery is reported to. have carried out a successful engagement in the region of Sidi Bar rani. The British guns were moved up to within 8000 yards of the Italians under cover of darkness, and were effectively camouflaged. All the next day the British troops lay out in the desert in the full vienv; of the Italians, hut were undiscovered. After dusk,,all the guns were brought into action and assisted by aircraft, they inflicted severe damage on the enemy vehicles and caused many casualties. Many of the supply vessels also wore hit. Two hundred rounds'wore fired , before the action was broken' off, and the Italians were taken! so completely by surprise that they did. not return the fire. . .. .....
