ARMED SUPPORT.
RUSSIA AND TURKEY. PACT UNDER NEGOTIATION. (United Press Association. —Copyright I LONDON, October 16. The Sofia correspondent of the Associated Press says it is reliably reported that Russia and Turkey are negotiating a pact of military assistance. Russia is reported to be offering armed support if the Axis attempts to seize the Dardanelles. Turkey chartered steamers and evacuated nationals from Rumania. The Turkish newspapers warn the Axis against attempts to intimidate Greece and Turkey. Train loads of German soldiers are rolling across Hungary to Rumania. Probably 50.000 are already in Rumania. A motorised division of about 15,000 has arrived at Ploesti. -
The Berlin correspondent of the Swiss newspaper “Basler Nachrichten” says it is officially announced that the Rumanian and Hungarian crisis has been overcome, the Axis bridging the difficulties. The presence of German troops in Rumania it is claimed contributed greatly to the settlement of the dispute. The Rumanian press war against Hungary has ceased. The official German news agency says the disappearance of atrocity reports from the Hungarian and Rumanian press is interpreted as an indication that the trouble has subsided, but the newspapermen of both countries know that the censor received German inspired instructions to eliminate such reports. No confirmation has reached official quarters in London of various alleged important changes in the situation in Rumania, states a British Official Wireless message. Press reports continue to be received suggesting developments affecting the attitude of both the Soviet and Turkey. For example, some M these reports, emanating from Bucharest, speak of the movement of Soviet troops intq Rumania over the Bessarabian frontier. Pending confirmation, these reports are treated with the greatest reserve and caution in view of the fact that the communications are presumably controlled by the (German masters at Bucharest.
