STATE HOUSES.

THE BLOCK ON TANCRED STREET MOST OF WOODWORK DONE The main part , of the woodwork in the 12 State houses at the end of Tailored Street has practically been completed, but it is stated that minor jobs will keep the carpenters at work till about Christmas time. The houses should then be almost completed. This new block should prove a very valuabe addition to this part of the town and should further relieve the housing shortage which has existed. There are seven brick and five wooden structures, and all are single units, being mostly five-roomed, although there, are a few larger houses. The foreman on the work (Mr J. Grice) told the “Guardian" this 1 morning that ten had been lined with plaster board. Papering and the laying of drains was in progress. All the materials required for the building had been obtained without much difficulty. Labour had not proved a very great problem.

When the men had been at work on the last block of houses near the Ashburton East School the prospective tenants had been continually harassing the builders in the hope that the buildings would be hurried up, but there had been none of this on the present block.
