“TRIAL BALLOON.”
NAZI-JAPANESE ALLIANCE.
ITALY REPORTED AS> PARTNER WASHINGTON, September 25. Officials received with reserve reports of a Japanese and German defence alliance. They do not doubt that diplomatic .collaboration! exists but regard Shanghai reports as a trial balloon to test the opinion of the remainder of the world, particularly the United States. Such a pact, it was said, would, throw Japan openly into war 'with Britain and certainly aggravate the strained relations with the United States.
It is officially stated that the Herman and Japanese defensive' .alliance is :not confirmed in London. The Romo correspondent of the Japanese newspaper “Yomiuri Shimbun” said that the Ambassador (Mr Amau) and Count 'Ciano discussed recent international conditions, during which conversations Count Ciano is reported to have supported’ the Japanese entry into Indo-China. Authoritative Tokio advice state that Italy is becoming a signatory to the Japanese and German alliance which so far lias not been ratified but has been agreed to' in principle.
