ST. JAMES THEATRE. y When Bob Hope, starred appropriately enough as a radio comedian, becomes involved in tracking down a rearsome murder-bent creature caled “The Cat,” tho result is a. motion picture which yields place to none for sheer, spine-tingling thrills and gag-paced fun. As the reader might have guessed, tho picture is ‘Tho Cat and the Canary,” which screens to-night and finally on Monday, with charming lovely Paulette Goddard co-starred with Bob. The chills and fun get under way—as they did in tho great stage play on which the picture is based—when seven people come to a mansion to hear the will of the deceased ovfner. All but ono of them are potential heirs. When Paulette Goddard becomes thp heiress, she is immediately menaced by a hairy, murderous creature called “The Cat,” and it’s all Boh can do, his courage bolstered by his very best gags, to save lovely Miss Goddard from the clutches of “The Cat,” what with mysterious noises, a murder, clutching hands and mysterious passageways. In the supporting cast are John Beal, Douglass Montgomery, Gale Sbndergaard, Elizabeth Patterson and George Zuceo.

An interesting and varied array of featurettes includes Walt Disney’s Technicolor special “Farmyard Symphony.”

METHVEN CROQUET CLUB. The Methven Croquet Club hold a successful afternoon in aid of its funds. There was a largo attendance of members and friends. A “bring and buy” stall did good business. Items were contributed by Mesdames J. Adams, J. 'Scott, Miss Daphne Adams and Master Willie Stevens, Competitions were won by Mrs J. Watson, Mrs W. Sounness, Miss A. McLay and Miss Jean Thomson. EUCHRE TOURNEY AT SEAFIELD. The Scofield Sub-Centre of file Red Cross Society hold its fortnightly euchre tournament in the ISbafield hall, together with a sales table. Two competitions were won by Mr J. Martin and Mr H. Johnson. Tile winners at cards were Mrs R. J. Martin and Mr J. Martin, with Messrs N. Bennison and J. Shelley equal, second. SONG RECITAL.

A song recital is to be given in St. Stephen’s Hall next Thursday evening by Madame Mae Brodie, whose delightful recital at the [Radiant Hall some time ago after her-return from a tour in Europe will be’ remembered by the large number of people who attended. Madame Brodie will have as an assistant artist, her son, Mr Donald Brodie, and !Dir. El. Ivost will be at the piano.

HAMONICA BAND DANCE. !E Over 150 couples mere present at the weekly dance of the Ashburton Imperial Harmonica, Band held last evening. The final of the special prize montecarlo was won hy Miss Lamb and Mr Bowes. Thirty-six couples took part. Other monte carlo winners were: Miss White and Mr Williams, Miss Smith and Mr Kirkland, Miss Fox and Mr Walls. Music was supplied Wy the Yacht Club Boys’ orchestra and extras were played by Messrs P.
