FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Sept. 14, 1890) ,Opening of Fishing.—To-day being the opening of the fishing season, Messrs Shury and Simpson made an early start, and within four hours time landed 13 fish, the largest of which was 21bs 4ozs. The bait used was whitebait phantoms, and the locale in the vicinity of the Ashburton bridge. ' A number of disciples of Izaak Walton proceeded from Ashburton to the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers this morning, and are expected to return with good wallets, as the rivers are in first-rate condition, and, Mr Shury informs us, full of small fish.
