The British Purchasing Commissioner ((Mr Beale), addressing the Foreign Trade Conference, said that direct attack was necessary to defeat Germany and added that. British, purchases 1 , including French contracts taken over, totalled 1,800,000,000 dollars. Two thousand eight hundred ’planes had been delivered and- 11,000 more had been ordered; also between 400,000 and 500,000 tons of steel were being purchased monthly,
