FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” July 29, 1890). At Mount Somers.—A soiree and eoncart was held in the Mount Somers Schoolroom on Friday, the 25th inst.. in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church. The weather which had been very wlat in the morning became fair in time for the hour of meeting, and continued fair till after midnight. There was, a large gathering of people considering the district and the season, about one hundred and fifty being presc-nt, and all seemed thoroughly to enjoy the opportunity of meeting and conversing with so many neighbours and friends, as well as the which followed. Telegrams received in Paris announce the renow-al of the armistice at Buenos Aires, and that the formation of a conciliation cabinet is probable'. The Argentine legation in London reports that the revolt is subdued. Private telegrams also state that a settlement is probable, hut latest news asserts that no compromise has been arrived at, and that the quarrel must be fought out, to. the bitter end. There is also a, report that a plebiscite is to be taken" for the election of President; and that the candidates will he Celman, , General Mitre (late President),' and Ri.bero (leader of the radical faction). " TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGtf (From the “Guardian,” July 31, 1915) Warsaw Doomed .-‘-Berlin : A communique states: General von Woyrsch forced the Vistula at several points and the Russians have evacuated the centre line from the Vistula to the Bug. Rumania.—-Reuter’s Paris correspondent states that negotiations for Rumania’s entry into the war on the Allies’ side are progrsesing satisfactorily. A treaty has been prepared and awaits the signature of only one belligerent. It provides that- Rumania shall intervene within, two months qf the conclusion- of the treaty. Meanwhile, there is to be the strictest examination of goods going to Turkey. Rumania ha*i asked the Allies to lend expert Customs examiners.
