FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From tho “Guardian,” July. 29, 1890). Wool Sales—A meeting of woolbuyers was held in Christchurch yesterday. The meeting decided-. “That the holding of wool sales at Ashburton, Rangiora, and Amber ley is opposed to the, best interests of both buyers and sellers, and this meeting pledges itself to rise its utmost endeavours to centralise the sales in Christchurch. A Presentation—Mr James. Campbell, the well-known auctioneer, formerly of Acland, Campbell and Co. (during his connection with which firm he was resident in Ashburton), and feyr six years auctioneer for the National Mortgage and Agency Company, is leaving, Christchurch, for Gisborne, to join the firm of' Common, Shelton, and Co. He, was yesterday presented with a purse of sovereigns in Christchurch The presentation was made in the presence of a. large representative, gathering, by Mr John Anderson, jmi/r., president of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The president of the Chamber of Commerce and other gentlemen spoke in highly eulogistic terms of Mr Campbell’s ability and probity. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGtf (From the “Guardian,” July 29, 1915). No National Cabinet —Wellington: The Government Party held a meeting after the House, rose at 5.30 this afternoon for the purpose, of considering the reply received from the Opposition as a result of their caucus this morning. Seen at the close of the meeting, Mr D. H. Guthrie, Chief Government Whip, stated that Mr-Massey had laid' the Opposition reply before the party, which reply was ,a. refusal of the terms offered by the Government for a National Cabinet. General regret was, said Mr Guthrie,, expressed by the party that such a reply had been, given to what were considered fair and' reasonable proposals. Mr Guthrie further stated that was unlikely that the negotiations would be procreded with,' further.
