LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” June 3, 1800). Typhoid Fever-Typhoid fever is still prevalent in New Zealand. During April the deaths from typhoid fever increased from six to eleven. Of these seven occurred in Wellington; two each in Auckland and Dunedin. Influenza caused one death in each of the four cities. Diphtheria caused one death in April in each of the four ! cities. The mortality from diarrhoel diseases "were much the greatest in Wellington—namely, seven deaths, all of children, against one death in Auckland and two in Dunedih. Germans in Africa—King Muanga who was lately driven out of Uganda, has regained possession of the whole of the country. It is reported he has granted Dr. Peters treaties and monopolies in favour of Germany.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” June 3, 1915). The King’s Birthday—To-day is the 50th birthday of the birth of King George V. His Majesty was born in Marlborough on Juno 3/1865. In accordance with the usual custom, the day in Ashburton was observed as a close holiday. All business places, banks, public buildings and schools were closed. Flags were flown from the chief buildings, and the ensigns that were recently presented to the next-of-kin of the Ashburton County contingenters wero flown in front of the houses. The town itself was very quiet, and there were no sports fixtures in the Domain. The Ashburton Miniature Rifle Association’s championship meeting brought a few visitors to the town, but the trots in Christchurch took a greater number away. The Presbyterian Sunday Schools of Canterbury held a conference at St. Andrew’s Church, and the Canterbury Methodist Young Women’s Bible Class Union held a rally in the Baring Square Schoolroom. A few picnics were held in different parts of the County. The day although sunny and bright, was a bit fresh.
