ATHLETICS.

JUNIOR AND WOMEN’S EVENTS. SOME FINE PERFORMANCES. CHRISTCHURCH March 17. Champion athletes from all over . New Zealand met at Rugby Park, Christchurch, on Saturday afternoon for the national women’s and junior athletic championships the second athletic meeting of its kind in the Dominion. Strong teams from Auckland, Wellington and Otago guaranteed the success of the meeting. R. C. Brown’s time of 7miii 14 J-ssec in the mile walk was approximately ,4sec inside the British Empire junior record. Brown, who is still at Boys’ High School, is one of a family of wellknown walkers and is' one of the most promising youngsters in this branch of athletics the Dominion has seen for some time. His performance to-day was very good and he made his own ■'pace nearly all the way. One of the outstanding performances of the day was that of A. C. Halliday, the brilliant young South Canterbury hurdler, who won the 120 yards hurdles final in 15 4-ssec, equalling the New Zealand record. The race was a fine one. B. W. Flatman 1 , another Canterbury representative, pushing Halliday all the way. Halliday’s run into the wind was a particularly good one. Halliday gave even a better display when he won the 220" yards hurdles in the record time of 27sec. C. R. Bai-. ley’s previous record was 2Ssec. This record is almost' certain to he recognised, and Halliday only needs to keep on going as he has started to figure in senior national finals. His two titles were well won. A popular win was that of Miss S. Oliphant (South Canterbury) in the women’s 80 metres hurdles. Her time of 13see was 4-ssec inside the New Zealand standard- Miss Oliphant won decisively, hurdling in good style. The former champion, Miss M. Grindrod, was beaten into third place by Miss D. * Adams, Otago. Miss Grindrod, however, was probably tired ' after the broad jump.
