LAND SCHEME
SETTLEMENT AT WESTERFIELD.
10,000 ACRES SAID TO BE WANTED
GOVERNMENT MAKING INQUIRIES.
Inquiries have been made lately by Government officials with the object of purchasing from 7000 to 10,000 acres of the light land around the Westerfield district, to be prepared for irrigation, cut up into blocks and settled under a Government scheme. It is understood that while these inquiries into land that might be available for the purpose have been made, the scheme is as yet .in a nebulous state and it is not at all certain that the proposals' will ho gone oh with. Inspection of several areas that could bo considered to be suited to the scheme as it is at present planned have beeif made, and it is understood that, in at least one case where an offer for the land was made, the suggested price was well below the owner’s idea of values.
As (the proposals have been outlined ,it is tho intention to place a number of Scheme 13 men on the land taken up to_ prepare it generally and make it ready for the application of water from the County irrigation system. It is considered that tho land contemplated to be incorporated in the closer settlement plan will respond readily to irrigation.
