ENTERTAINMENTS.
ST. JAMES THEATRE. The popularity of the “Hardy’s Ride High” plus “Audioscopiks” and the resit of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer programme has been nrovec’Pby the; excellent houses over the extended season, the programme will be presented finally to-night. On Thursday and Friday nights commencing at 7.45 p.m. sharp and again at the lhatinee on Friday a compact and highly entertaining three-star programme ,will he shown with Chapter S cf “Flaming Frontiers” followed! by the exciting mystery thriller “Mystery House” featuring 'Dick Pu/rcell and Ann Sheridan, a piece of wire, a. man’s wig and a rifled safe, these are the three clues in this perfect crime—almost. Rounding off the bill is “Going Places,” with Dick Powell and Anita Louise heading the cast, a. hilarious farce whose action is interspersed with some highly original and tuneful song numbers. In this production, Powell is given another fine chance to demonstrate the talents as a comedian which he revealed to such good effect in .“Cowboy from Brooklyn,” and the supporting cast is largely made up of actors whose fame as funny-men has kng been well established, notably Alien Jenkins. Walter Catlett, Harold Huber and Thurston Hall. “Going Places” introduces three now sorigs. “Say it With A Kiss,” “Mutiny in the .Nursery” and “Jeepers Creepers.” Dick Powell gets some able musical assitauce from Louis (Satchelmouth) Armstrong and his trumpet, and Maxine Sullivan, dusky songstress who started the current craze for swinging old favourites with her “sweet swing” version of “Loch Lomond.” DANCE; AT LYNDHURST. 1 The Lyndhurst bachelors and spinsters held their New Year dance in the hall recently. Visitors were present from the surrounding districts. Novelty dances were won by Miss Orchard and Mr S. Letham, Miss E. Lemon and Mr A. Doig, and Miss G. Sullivan and partner. A cako competition was won by Miss Norma Gadd. The joint secretaries were Misses M. and Isabel Cretnev. Music was' played by Messrs J. Cretney, K. Cook, and Steffens, Messrs Ray Lilley and K. Cook were masters of ceremonies. '
