SEVERE WINTER.
WORST FOR YEARS IN GERMANY FUEL AND VEGETABLES SCARCE. LONDON, January 12. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says: “Germany is facing the severest winter for years. Temperatures are from 36 to 4.6 degrees (Fahrenheit) below freezing point. “All rivers and canals are icebound, resulting in an acute shortage of fuel, 35 per cent, of which is transported by water. Shops and cafes are closing because of the lack of central heating.
“There is an acute shortage of all vegetables.
“On the other hand, 300,000 Germans are working in intense heat- in iron and steel works and mines, getting a quart of Russian tea daily to sustain their strength. ’ ’
