CATTLE ON ROADS.
DAMAGE IN COUNTRY DISTRICT®. COUNCIL TAKING ACTION. The herding of cattle on County roads, especially near townships, has been causing a good deal of inconvenience to property owners lately, and the Ashburton County Council is taking active steps to stop the practice. On a number of occasions gates and fences have been damaged by cattle pushing against them, while lawns and ornamental plots in front of houses have also suffered to some extent. Evidently those herding the cattle have not enough feed for their stock and are taking advantage of that offered on the roadsides. This is a serious offence under the Impounding Act, stated .the County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) to-day. In country districts where there are side roads used only occasionally by traffic, the offence is not regarded as so serious, hut in places near townships, where the highways are much busier, the herding of cattle is held a danger to the public and offenders can he substantially fined.
