WOMEN’S HOCKEY.
WIN FOR ASHBURTON. MATCH AGAINST ELLESMERE. With both teams showing first-class combination some exciting play was seen when the Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association B representative team defeated the Ellesmere A representatives by four goals to two at Ashburton on Saturday. The defence of the visiting team was excellent. The Ashburton forwards were fast, particularly the right wing, Miss P. Barnes, and the inside left, Miss M. Dtonaldson. The latter was the outstanding player on the ground. The Ashburton backs kept Ellesmere out effectively, tiro goalkeeper having little to do. Both Misses J. Hansen and ,J. Kilworth made several good interceptions. Miss Donaldson scored two of Ashburton’s goals, Miss E. Dutton scored oiie, and the other came from a nenalty bully.' Misses Gwatkin and Cole scored for Ellesmere. ASHBURTON BEATS ELLESMERE. In an even game, Ashburton’s C team beat Ellesmere B by four goals to one. (Combination was lacking on both sides. For the home side, two goals were shot each by B. Brand and V. Wellman, while M. Marshall scored for Ellesmere. The referees were Messrs W. T. Corbett and R. J. Templeton. Both Ellesmere teams were entertained after the matches by the Ashburton Association. JUNIOR COMPETITIONS. Only junior matches were played in the Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association’s competitions on Saturday.
Tlio grounds were in excellent order fof the games. Rakaia defeated Wakanui by two goals to one. M. and D. Johnston scored for the winners, and J. Hendrio obtained Wakanui’s only goal. Tho referee was Miss D. Fowlce. Hinds A proved too strong for Technical and won easily by seven goals to one. Scorers for Hinds were N. Lister (2), S. Simpson (2), A.’ Chisnall (2) and I. Tilson. B. Skinner scored for Technical. The referee was Mrs W. W. Lowe. Hinds B were overwhelmed by Methven, the latter winning by 12 goals to one. The outstanding player was Miss J. Williams, who scored seven goals. R. Williams shot four-goals for Methven. and J. Young obtained the other. J. Reddecliffe scored for Hinds. Mr G. Johns refereed. CANTERBURY THE CHAMPIONS BLENHEIM, September 2. In the final of the women’s hockey championships tournament Canterbury beat Eastern (Southland) holders of the K Cup, by 2 goals to 1.
