Following rain on Friday and Saturday, to-day was. the only day of play. Spectators arrived in fairly large numbers this morning. The wicket rolled out beautifully and the opt fie Id was fairly fast. )\ hit el aw and Qngley opened for New Zealand, the former facing the fast medium bowler, Phillipson, from the northern end, lor the first over, which was a maiden, Whitclaw being content to let the majority pass. Watts took up the attack at the southern end, and Ongley sbon opened his account with a single. Whitelaw scored a brace past square leg on the next ball. The first boundary of the match was scored by Ongley off a short hall from Phillipson. The ball rattled the square leg pickets and 10 was on the hoard. In the next over the batsmen continued to. bat vigorously, scoring well off both bowlers. Walsh replaced Phillipson, but singles came steadily, and 40 was on the board lor 35 minutes’ play. Ongley reached 30, hooking Watts to the square leg fence. He repeated the performance in the next ball. Whitelaw’s play to this stage was characterised by delightful placements. Fifty came up in 41 minutes, but seven runs later Ongley was bowled by Walsh. 57—1—35. Menzies joined Whitelaw, who had reached the twenties. They were together at 12.30, when the score was 58 for one.
