EWE FAIR

ASHBURTON COUNTY BREEDERS. PRICES AT TINWALD fO-DAY, ON PAR WITH NORTH CANTERBURY. With a total entry of about 20,000, the Ashburton County breeders’ ewo fair was held at the Tinwald stock yards to-day. For some time there has been an agitation for an annual ewe fair solely for Ashburton County clients, but it was not until this year that such a sale was conducted. Confined to County breeders, it was natural that the entries would drop considerably on those of last year, when over 00,000 were forwarded. Following the rain of last week, some entries were withdrawn because, of the brighter prospect for feed., u The weather was perfect for the sale, and there was a large attendance of farmers and others interested. Owing principally to climatic conditions, the hard winter, followed by the long, dry spell in the latter ijaart of the summer, the average quality of the sheep was not up to that of last year’s sale. There were exceptions, however, for a few' first-class lines of two-tooths were penned. Hill stations were well represented with annual drafts. A good proportion of these were younger lines. Very few sheep were driven this year, nearly every draft being brought to the yards by trucks. There were therefore not many lines showing the effects of travelling. Up to I p.m., when only two-tooths had been sold, values were about an a par with those realised at the recent North Canterbury fairs. No lines made up to the prices obtained at the open sale last year, when- a pen of 60 twotooths were sold at 43s 6d. The highest price this morning was 32s 6d, for a draft of 134 sold on account of J. N. Buick (Valetta), the same vendor, with another excellent lino of 186 Romney-Merinos, 3d. A very good draft of 65 Romney-Mer-inos, forwarded by Jock Davidson (Mar ronan) made up to 30s, the same client obtaining 29s 3d for another pen of 64 of the same line. A splendid entry of 400 Coldstream two-tooths of Corriedale breed, which were sold on account of D. S'. Studholme, fetched 28s 6d, while a further first-class line of 314 Romney-Corriedales vended by W. R. Hammond (Winehmore) sold at 27s 6d. All these sheep were in the pink of condition and had not been pampered in any way.

Values for two-tooths on the average were above those realised at the Methven sale on Friday.
