■ MR J. McNAIR. :, : (Special to the “ Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.' The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday, in his sixty-fifth year, of Mr John McNair, an extremely popular and capable railway engineer, who retired from the position of District Engineer at Christchurch in. May, 1938. . • - MV McNair was horn near Glasgow and came to New Zealand when he was eight years of age. He received his schooling at Glentunnel, and as a youth entered the teaching profession. He taught at Rakaia for a while, and in ISOI he joined the Public 1 Works Department as- an engineering cadet. Mr McNair was assistant engineer to the Wellington - Manawatu Railway Company. When the company was purchased by the Government in December; 1908, Mr McNair became an officer of the Railways Department. ■' From 1909 to 1914 he was assistant engineer at Invercargill, and then he was transferred to Dunedin where he remained until 1922. He was then sent to Auckland as assistant engineer. In February, 1924, lie was apointed District Engineer at Invercargill, and after a short period there he was transferred to Wanganui. He returned to Christchurch as District Engineer in September, 1925. . . . Mr McNair .is survived by his wife, two sons, Messrs Douglas McNair (Christchurch) and Bruce McNan* (Wellington), and one daughter, Mrs Wilbur Stewart (Christchurch). .
