national championships. - SHARPLEIY WINS THREE-TITLES. HASTINGS, March 12. In light rain the New Zealand amateur athletic championships concluded at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday. The track was heavy and times in most events were not fast. The highlight of the meeting was the performance of P. F. Sharpley (Hawke’s Bay), who won the 100 yards sprint, 120 yards hurdles, and 220 yards hurdles. In tho 120 yards hurdles Sharpley equalled his own New Zealand record of 15sec, and in the 220 yards hurdles he broke the New Zealand record of 25 , l-ssec. The interproyincial shield was. won by the Wellington. Centre, with 35 points. Other centres were placed as follows: —Canterbury 33, Otago 28, Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay 25, West Coast (North Island) 15, Auckland 11. The Speight Cup for the march past was won by Wellington. There was a crowd estimated at 7500. Results:— 880 Yards—V. P. Boot (Canterbury) 1, T. D. Blewett (Canterbury) .2, Lu Hannan (West Coast, North Island) 3. Time, lmin 54sec. Lbngley (Hawke’s Bay) took the lead, with Boot close behind. Longley led at .the bell, when Boot came through with Hannan and Blewett close behind. A performance equalling the world's record for a woman athlete over 100 yards was registered by Doreen Lumlev on Saturday afternoon, when the Auckland provincial junior and women’s amateur athletic championships were cided at Carl aw Park. lir clocking llsec, Aliss Lumley defeated the' Australian Empire Games winner and record holder for the distance, Aliss Decima Norman, by only nine inches. Aliss Norman was competing in the broad jump championship when the 100 yards event was due to start, and tho fact that she left the former to run may have affected her performance in the- sprint. standing in the broad junup and 220 yards events, which - she won. In the broad jump she registered 17ft 10-Jin, a distance that is 10-Jin better than the New Zealand standard and Ift 4in better than that recorded by! Miss M. Qrindrod, who was second. Miss Norman won the 220 yards championship in good time for the track of 26 2—ssec. This is 3-ssec better than the New Zealand standard.
