LEASE WANTED.
RESERVE AT RANCITATA MOUTH.
THE ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
A lease for 21 years of the reserve used by fishermen at the mouth of the Rangitata River will he sought fiom the Ashburton County Council, according to the decision of the council of the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society at its monthly meeting. The chairman (Mr A. J. Millichamp) presided. At present the society holds the lease from year to year. It was decided to apply for an open season for both imported and native game in the district, under the same conditions as last year. The South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society reported that a shag rookery on the Rangitata River has been shot out at a cost of £3 17s, and asked the Ashburton Society to shave 'the cost on a 50-50 basis. This was agreed to. When a report that out-hoard motors wore being used on Lake Heron was brought before the council it was decided to authorise Mr C. Urquhart, ranger lor the district, to prevent further offences of this kind, as the use of power boats of any description on the lake is prohibited. The condition of the anglers’ accommodation lint at the mouth ol the Rakaia River was discussed and it was decided to have it renovated and painted. The Hakatere Sports Club was granted tbo use of the society s ieservoat the mouth of the’Ash hurt on River for its annual sports meeting on, New Year’s Day. * ..... The ranger has moved 20,000 brown trout from parts of'the Hinds River, which were drying up, to the main stream.
