THE ASHBURTON CENTRE. ARRANGEMENTS FOR SEASON. The success of the loarn-to-swim campaign conducted by clubs affiliated with the Ashburton Swimming Centre last season was clearly demonstrated by the fact that during the campaign 631 children, who previously could not swim, qualified for distance swimming certificates, stated the report, presented at the annual meeting of the Centre last evening. Thanks were extended to instructors who had given so much assistance. The chairman (Mr A. Thomson) presided. From a bathing outlook the season was fair and clubs generally bad good seasons, continued the report. Alienton, which bad entered the competitions .last season, promised to be a

strong club. It had a fine pool, bui lacked seating accommodation Club support and Government assistance might see this work accomplished. A survey of all baths under the jurisdiction of the' centre was made last season. It was believed that the Government intended to make grants for improvements. Appreciation of the work of the educational officer (Mr W. Hunter) was expressed, a, great deal of the success of the lonrn-to-.swim campaign being attributed to him. It was hoped that the president (Mr W. C. Smith/, who had been confined to his home, would soon be able to resume activities with the centre. Appreciation of the work of Mr N. Batchelor, as delegate on the New Zealand Swimming Council, was also recorded.

The report of the secretary (Mr 11. P. Milsom) stated that the champ'ou ships offered by the centre were not competed for with enthusiasm, hast season only one event was swum off, the bO yards intermediate, this being won by G. Bowden, of the Ashburton Club.

“It is a pity that a little- more enthusiasm is not shown for these com petition's, which stimulate healthy rivalry among the different clubs in the County. We hope that this season swimmers will train, and race in these championships,” lie report added.

The financial statement showed that the year began with a credit of £l6 Os lid, and ended with a credit of £l7 4s 4d.

Robilliard, T. W-. R. Gudsell; judges, Messrs J. Hardie, A. McCallum, A. R. Gourley, J. Mcßae, and J. La.ne (diving), W. H. Woods, M. C. Knox, P. Brown, J. Mcßae, W. Hunter, J. Hardie (swimming); handicapper, Mr C. H. Bay; assistant handicapper, 'Mr S. Thompson. In response to a request from the New Zealand Swimming Council it was decided to ask clubs fpr nominations for a coaching committee to assist in the learn-to-swim campaign.

A recommendation from the council that a rule be made debarring swimmers who represented a particular club from competing in an, inter-club carnival for any other club except in cases of change of residence, was agreed to. It was decided to instruct the delegates to the New Zealand Council to oppose any inqrease in registration fees. It was decided to enlist the assistance of school teachers for the learn-to-swim campaign.

The Ashburton Borough Council will he approached to provide free water for swimming baths during February when a month of concentrated instruction in swimming will be given by representatives of the Centre.

It was decided to communicate with the Christchurch Centre with a view to giving publicity to the campaign. Centre championships were allotted to the East Ashburton Swimming Club.

Dates for annual carnivals were granted as follows:—East Ashburton, January 28; Allenton, February 4; Ashburton, February 11.

THE ASHBURTON CLUB. ARRANGEMENTS FOR CARNIVAL. At a. meeting held oy Tuesday evening final arrangements were made for the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Club’s opening carnival on Saturday evening.
