TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(From the “Guardian” Bpc. 1, 1913)

Lauriston Notes—The district is now looking better than it has done for years. There is an abundance of feed everywhere and consequently stock is looking well, especially breeding ewes and lambs. The lambing percentages, with a few exceptions, are up to the average and thejre will .be a good many drafts ready beforte the New Year. The orchards and gardens are all promising an abundance of fruit and vegetables, apples and plums being especially prolific this year, while the gooseberries and currants are growing under the burden of an abundant harvest. The cereal crops are looking very well, and although the area is not so big as last y'ear still if things remain normal we may expect a yield rather above that of last year, /but it is top soon, yet to say with certainty wliat the result will be. I notice several very fine crops of early oats about the district, and a number of farmers will be harvesting before the New Year. The teams are busy getting the land heady for turnips of which I think there will be about the same acreage as last year. A tennis club has lately been started here, and a court' has bepn laid out in the local school ground, I understand the club is going to_ have an opening day shortly, when is is hoped to see all supporters of the movement preaent.
