. ELM AT? C"H SUCCESSFUL. The Summer Meeting of the Ashburton County Rtnc-ing Club was held to-day in ideal weather. The track was fast and there was a large attendance. The Ashburton Silver Band was present and placed selections during the intervals between races. Dividend was a warm favourite for the opening event, but finished out of the money. Ilithyia and Happy 'Memory were the first to break the line, -closely followed by Bastille. Elmareh and Gold Boy were tailing the field along the back. At the turn Maroha moved forward and Elmareh made a fast run. The field bunched at the distance and Elmareh joined Maroha and Ilithya in the lead. These three crossed the line together, heads separating them. Happy Memory was close up fourth. The defection of three horses from the Lagmhor Plate dispensed with the necessity of divisions. The field gave a great deal of trouble at the start, Blazealong and Pol Roger giving considerable trouble. Sportsman broke the tapes, and. when the field finally mas dispatched Blazealong and- Pol Roger were left. Keen sight was first to show up from Spartan and Leaderette. As the held turned for home Keen Sight was doing it -well in front and was merer headed to beat Improvident by two lengths with Real Lady in third position a. length away. Spartan was close up. Sure Potts was first away followed by Charles Russell. Girl Pat broke badly passing the stands and was pulled up. Along the back Sure Potts led Charles Russell, Acuity, and Lady Vascylyne. Crossing the top Lady Vascylyne took the lead and was nrst to turn for home from Sure Potts, Palomar and William Pott's. The rest of the field was out of the contest. At the distance Lady Vascylyne was being hailed as the winner, but Sure Potts responded gamely and crossed the line a length ahead of Lady Vascylyne. Palomar was third, two lengths ahead of William Potts, who was fourth. Times, 3.25 3-5, 3.25 4-5, 3.26 1-5. TINWALD HANDICAP, Of £200; second horse £35 and third horse £ls from the stake. Minimum weight, 7.0. One Mile and a-quarter.
