ENTERTAINMENTS.

ST. JAMES THEATRE. “Fight for Your Lady,” with a tiptop cast including John Boles, Jack Oalcie, Ida Lupino, Alargot Grahame, Gordon Jones and Erik Rhodes is the main feature on the double bill showing at the St. James Theatre this evening. The other film, “Air Devils, is full of excitement and interest.

Robert Taylor, literally “ took it on the chin” during the filming of “Three Comrades,” screen version of the widely read Erich Maria Remarque novel, which opens at a matinee to-morrow for two days, with an all-star cast including, besides Taylor, Margaret Sulla van, Franehot Tone and Robert Young. For in the new picture the young star participated in the most realistic riot scenes ever produced in the screen. The episodes depict the activities of a revolutionary group in tho aftermath of the World War. The actor had to fight his way through the mob and took it on the chin from some 300 “rioters” armed with canes and clubs. Although written by the author of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” and dealing with post-war days in Europe, “Three, Comrades” is primarily the poignant tale of a fateful love between a man and a woman. Frank Borage directed and important supporting roles are filled by Guy Kibbee, Lionel Atwill, Henry Hull, Charley Grapewinand Alontv Woollev.

The splendid supporting programme includes “Modeling for Money,” with Pete Smith, “How To Raise a Baby,” with Robert Benehley, providing the fun, and a cartoon “A Day at the Beach.”

BREAK-UP RECITAL. A pleasing and successful concertwas given by the pupils of Miss Lorna M. Acton in St. Stephen’s Hall. The hall was filled with an interested and appreciative audience, all items being well applauded, and encores frequefnt. The children, without exception, gave a good rendering of their respective itjems, and the effect of the grouping was very pleasing. At the conclusion of the programme, Frances Collins made a presentation to Miss Acton, on behalf of tire Allenton pupils. Pmje-win ners were as follow ;

GARDEN PARTY AT RAKAIA. The Busy Bees of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Rakaia, held a successful garden party in the grounds of the Manse recently, when £7 10s was raised in aid of Presbyterian missions. . The stallholders were: —Sweets and cakes, Misses G. Lee, Natalie Hardy, Fay Shannon ; work, Misses M. Lee, Phyllis Gray, Doreen Pluck; naildriving, Leslie Stevenson ; dajrts, Errol Hardy; refreshments, Mrs D. B. Ashford, and Misses Mary Ashford and Rosina Pluck. The winners of competitions were; — Miss J. Stevenson. Mrs S. Hardy, Misses Enid Burrows, Phyllis Gray, and Neil Hardy.
