NO MASS MIGRATION.

NEW ZEALAND AND JEWS.

MR SAVAGE GIVES ASSURANCE.

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 23

“There is no suggestion of mass immigration of refugees. The ease of each intending migrant is handled on application to the Minister for Customs,” said the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, to-day, commenting on a cabled report that 175 Austrian Jewish refugees are passing through Canada on their way to Australia and New Zealand. Mr Savage said that naturally sympathy went out to those thousands of people suffering oppression in the various European countries hut practical sympathy was best shown by ensuring that those among them who wished to seek refuge in New Zealand would at least be certain of a place in industry. Sympathy without a practical background could easily be dangerous. He indicated that plans lor production must have a bearing on any policy of migration. “When we bring people from overseas we must have work waiting lor them. It is senseless to have them struggling for jobs against those whoare already here.”
