WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

THE STAVE LEY COMPETITIONS. The president (Mrs Pawsey) presided at the meeting of the Staveley Women’s Institute. Miss R. Robins, Association for Country Education tutor, who was accompanied by Mrs F. Curtis (president of the Mid-Canterbury Federation), gave a talk on indigestion. A report on the federation meeting, held at Methven, was given by Mrs Durran. Two new members were enrolled. Articles made by disabled returned soldiers were on sale. The proceeds of the sale of jam brought by members were given to the children’s Christmas fund. «

The competition resulted as follows: —Bowl of flowers, Mrs Hicks 1, Mrs Bufton 2, Mrs Ogg 3; jam jar of flowers, June Ogg 1, Mrs Pawsey 2, Mrs .Timpson and Hrs Hicks (equal) 3; bloom, Mrs S. Goldsmith 1, Mrs Norman 2, June Ogg 3; spike,.Airs Bufton 1, Airs Hicks 2, Mrs Durran 3; pastry, Airs Bufton 1, Aliss Ogg 2; essay on birthday, Airs Bufton 1, Airs Durran 2, Airs Timpson and Airs Pawsey (equal) 3.

THE LOWCLIFFE BRANCH. The November meeting of ;t*ne Lowcliffe Women’s Institute was held at the nurseries of Air and Airs G . Clark, Timvald. Alrs/R. Hawke pres idled. A motion of sympathy u ith Airs AlcRae was passed. It was decided to make a grant to the Chinese Refugee Fund. Correspondence was received from Miss Ray Robins and Aliss V. AlcMillnn about the Association for Country Education achievement day in Ashburton on Friday, December 2. It was decided to make full arrangements at a later meeting.

Arrangements were made for tu>e children’s party to be held next Saturday.

The competition was for the best garden apron, Airs Clark being judge. The result was: Airs J. Pea rue 1 and 2, Airs G. Reddeoliffo 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses (Alesdamos J. Pearce and H. Price, and Aliss G. Price), aftier which an inspection was made of the gardens, under the guidance of Air and Airs Clark.
