LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE.
(From the “Guardian,” Nov. 5, 1888)
Concert at Ivyle.—A most successful concert and danco was held in Mr H. Harrison’s grain store, Kyle, on Friday. There was-.a very large attendance, the large building being crowded, Mr William Allen, of Acton, being in the chair. Mrs William Harrison at the piano, and Mr Lambie was in attendance with his string band. Miss Fisher, Miss McMillan, and Miss Roe sang some nice songs, which were encored; Miss Roe’s singing being much appreciated by the audience. The great feat-lire of the evening was the singing and reciting of Mr R. Story, of Acton. His rendering of “The Libbeleerie Scandal” was perfect; Mr McCandlish sang some Irish songs* which delighted the audience greatly. After the concert was over the matrons of the district supplied the audience with abundance of refreshments, and dancing was kept up with vigour to the sweet strains of the Kyle fiddlers until an early hour.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 5, 1913). Effect of Strike at R-akaia—At the commencement of the strike Rakaia was fortunate in,/securing a large order of coal from Timaru. Though it means a slight advance in price, it is es'timatjed that there will be sufficient .to supply people even should -the strike keep up longer than is anticipated. The consumption of coal will be less than is usually the case, as traction engines will cease to run when there is no way of getting the produce Stvay. “Legitimate” orders for coal at Rakaia. are being filled, but “panic” orders are -being only partly met. One traction engine driver has been prevented from delivering 10,000 busnels of wheat at the Rakaia station owing to ships being laid up, and it is understood that others are similarly-placed. A quantity of chaff has been sold from the Rakaia district far the North Island, hut it cannot be sent-away until the strike is over. As regards sugar, Rakaia is better off than most places, but sales are being made upon an economic basis.
