LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian” Nov. 3 ,1888) Primitive Methodist Church —A tea meeting and social gathering to make the anniversary of the establishment of the Primitive Methodist Church in Ashburton was - held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening. The evening proved a most successful one. Mesdames Tucker, Crum, Addis, Tnevurza, Marsden, Cooper, Auckram, James and Tilly, supplied the tables, which we*re loaded, with every delicacy in season. Mr Isaac Scott a well-known member of the Methodist Church, occupied the chair, and fine Rev. •Mr Beattie, Roy. Mr Boothroyd, Captain Thompson of the Salvation Army, with Messrs Buxton M.H.R., J. W. Sawle and the Rev. P. W. Jones (of Waddington) addressed the meeting in turn. Mr Boothroyd referred to the growth of primitive Methodism in Ashburton and the necessity for an extended effort to raise funds to enlarge the Church and otherwise carry on the ministerial work in the town and district. A Christmas tree and sale of work would be organised shortly to raise funds for church purposes, an-ct all interested in the welfare of the church would he asked to help in the good work.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Fhom the “Guardian” Nov. 3, 1913) Ashburton Traffic Bridge—Tlie preliminary work in connection with the shortening of the Ashburton traffic bridge has been commenced, and the County Council’s contractor Mr Phil Norman) has begun the construction to the temporary ramp. The necessary trestles to carry the ramp are being erected, and the latter will be 20 feet in width and 180 feet long, extending from its junction with the present bridge to the training -wall recently erected by the council. From the training wall, earthworks will he thrown up and carried down to the bed of the ,river, and thence on to the main road at the Tinwald end of the bridge. The ramp will be run off at an angle from the present bridge, and when it reaches the training wall will be 20 feet distant from the bridge, afterwards running parallel with it. No portion of the present bridge will be closed during the progress of the work.

Speed Fiends —Complaint was made of the excessive speed I .at which motoritst travel through the Tinwald township. Recently several children have had narrow escapes 'from being knocked down by “the speed, fiends.”
