Mr A. Wdson, of the staff of the Hinds Post Office, is on annual leave, Mr B. S. Qretney, of Ashburton, is relieving. •

Mr G. H. Rollinson has been elected to fill the vacancy on the St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Vestry, caused by the resignation of Mr L. W. Christmas.

Messrs R. E. Lechner, of Christchurch, and Andrew Wilkie, of the West Coast, were visitors to Ashburton to-day.

Mr ,T. W. Mawson, town planning officer attached to the Department of Internal Affairs, visited Ashburton yesterday and conferred with officers of the Ashburton Borough and County Councils.

Fireman C. Bax, trainer of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade team, which won the recent brigade competition in Geraldine was presented with an enlarged photograph of the team last evening in appreciation of his work in the training of the members. The presentation was made by Fireman A. Leask on behalf of the team.

After 38 years’ service, Mr T. Gibson resigned from the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade last evening. In receiving the resignation with regret members spoke of the ardent way in which Mr Gibson had supported the brigade, and it was decided to make a recognition of his services.

Mr H*. E. Herring left Ashburton, last evening to take up residence in Wellington. Mr Hearing resided 111 Ashburton for 11 years, eight of which he was engineering instructor at the Technical High School. Mr Herring will be the guest of the Mid-Canter-bury branch of the Labour Party at a complimentary social at Rakaia on November 17.
