ELECTION OF LEADER.

RULES FOR N.S.W. LABOUR. OVATION' FOR MR LANG. (United Press Association—Copyright.) SYDNEY, October 31. By 524 votes to 41 a special conference of the New South Wales Labour Party which concluded yesterday, rejected a motion which sought to give the party caucus the right to elect the leader. That right thus remains with the State Confererfce, while the leader (Mr J. T. Lang) will retain the right to select the Labour Cabinet when necessary. The Federal Labour Leader (Mr J. Curtin), addressed the conference on Saturday, appealing for unity. He added: “Wo cannot have an autocracy or dictatorship in the Labour movement. 5 ’ He contended that the Parliamentary Party should be master of its own acts. No man should enter the caucus room with instructions from an outside executive as to how to vote.

Mr Lang arrived after Mr Curtin’s departure, and was given a tremendous ovation. Ho addressed the conference at length yesterday, but ho did not refer to Mr Curtin’s speech. Mr Lang carried the conference with him.
