CRICKET.

THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. THE TRANSPORT OF UMPIRES. Tlip Management Committee of the Ashburton Cricket Association met last evening, Mr R. H. Biggar presiding. Air Biggar stated that lie had conferred with Mr J. H. Muirhead in regard to the, allotment of his trophy, and Mr Muirhead, whose object in presenting it had been to stimulate interest in senior cricket, had inclined to the suggestion of the second-place team in the competition taking the trophy.

After a discussion of aspects of the question, it was agreed to ask Mr Muirhead to agree to the- trophy going to the team winning the final round of the competition.

The president stated that Mr N. J. Hosking had agreed to appointment as junior grade selector. The Canterbury Cricket Association wrote suggesting that the match, Minor Associations v. Canterbury, should be held on Wednesday, November SO, instead of on December 16.* It was stated that neither date particularly suited Ashburton, but the Canterbury Association wished to get off its outside matches as early as possible.

It was decided to agree to November 30 being fixed for the match.

The Canterbury Association also wrote suggesting a match against Ashburton at Christchurch on Christchurch Show Day, while the City and Suburban Association asked for a junior match on the same date.

A report in regard to the match to have been played in Christchurch on Labour Day, postponed because of rain, was presented by Air S. M. Cassidy, who stated it had been suggested that a return match should be played in Ashburton on Thursday.

Air I. M. Hamilton said the Oval wicket was not ready for play and would not be ready for three weeks at least, though the Domain Curator had already done good work on it. It was decided to play the match in the city on Christchurch Show Day, and the City and Suburban invitation for the same day was also accepted. Air S. M. Cassidy was appointed manager for both teams.

Transfers were granted as follow: F. Holloway, from Kia Ora Club to Public Works Irrigation Club; TV. O’Grady, from the Fairfield Club to Public Works Irrigation; H. G. Jones, from Technical Club to Public Works Irrigation; S. Al'cElhinney, from Ashburton to Old Boys; P. Barker, from High School to Old Boys.

Ten new players were registered

Regarding a request that a junior team from Alethven should he, entered in the Ashburton competitions, members pointed out the difficulties, including the changes that would result in the draw. It was left to the Draw Committee to investigate the request and report to the next meeting of the Management Committee.

Speaking on the subject of a challenge for the Minor Association trophy, hold by the West Coast, Air Hamilton said that the Coast last year inclined to playing in Ashburton this year and bringing the trophy with them.

It was agreed to place a challenge with the Canterbury Cricket Association.

Alessrs Hamilton and Cassidy xvere appointed; to represent the Association on the -Ashburton Umpires’ Association.

“The question of transporting _ umpires to country matches is giving some trouble,” stated the chairman. “The onus is on the travelling team, of course, but it does not end there. Teams do not always know where to find umpires, for instance.” After discussion, it. was agreed that Clubs bo advised that they were responsible for taking umpires to outside matches, and; that it should be suggested that secretaries or club captains should be responsible for actually contacting the umpire. Mr Cassidy said it was a question whether, while there was a shortage of umpires, the Association should appoint two to each senior match and one to each junior match, or to appoint one to the senior matches and two to .the juniors. The latter method might be an advantage to the younger players. Mr Hamilton agreed with this latter sentiment, but said that perhaps the umpires.themselves should first be consulted on the point.

Mr Cassidy said he was just seeking a ruling from the Management Committee.

It was agreed to leave a decision to the Umpires’ Appointment Board.

It was stated that the Management Committee would meet regularly, fortnightly, in future, at 7.1 b o’clock. Draw and Umpires. The draw and umpires for matches on Saturday were announced as follow: — Senior Grade—Fairfield v. Ivia Ora, at Fairfield, Messrs R. H. Biggar and J. Price; Technical v.
