BRITISH CABINET

VISCOUNT HAILSHAM RESIGNS. SUCCEEDED BY LORD RUNCIMAN. MR MACDONALD’S DUAL OFFICE. (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, October 31. It is officially announced that the King has accepted the resignation of Viscount Hailsham as Lord President of the Council, and has approved the following appointments: Lord President of the Council: Viscount Runciman. Lord Privy Seal: Sir John Anderson, succeeding Earl de la Warr. Secretary of State for the Dominions : Mr MacDonald.

In letters exchanged between Lord Hailsham and Mr Chamberlain the former makes it clear that his resignation was. not duo to any difference of opinion or divergence over'policy, and was actuated by a desire to leave at Mr Chamberlain’s disposal a post which does not involve the administration of any great department of State and so increase his opportunity of wider reinforcement of the Cabinet. Air MacDonald retains the Colonial Secretaryship, and the size of the Cabinet will thus be reduced* by one. ‘ In the speculation on reconstruction of the Cabinet in the press in recent weeks, Sir John Anderson’s name has been frequently mentioned in connection with the office of Lord Privy Seal, on the assumption that his services will be used within the Government, particularly in relation tfo questions affecting what is loosely described as national service.—British Official Wireless.
