DRAMA FESTIVAL.
NEW TROPHY FOR CONTEST. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES IN COUNTY. A drama festival, lasting lor two nights, will he held in Ashburton at tho end of. next April by the MidCanterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, according to the decision of the executive, which met yesterday afternoon. A new trophy, for competition in a women’s section, will he awarded at the festival. The existing trophy for drama is awarded each year to the best mixed team, it being at present held by Maronan. This trophy will also he competed for at the festival. Trials for the contest must he completed by the end of the second week in April. The president (Mrs F.. Curtis) presided and others present were: Mesdames R. Pearce, E. IT. Sandrey, D'. Mcßae, L. H. Ruddock, G. M. Breeze, R. Austin ancl 'M. Constable (secretary).
Preliminary arrangements were made for the annual meeting in 1939. The date was fixed as March 31, and the place of meeting, the St. Stephen’s Hall. It was decided to try to arrange for Miss Christabel Robinson (Vocational Officer of Christchurch) to give an address, and to ask Mrs G. McDonald, of Chari, to attend as representative pf the Dominion Executive. The competitions to he judged at the annual meeting are:—Bowl of flowers, suitable for dining table; specimen of brass; specimen of pewter. Final arrangements were made for tho Achievement Day in the Baring Square Hall on Friday, December 2. It was resolved to ask all Institutes to send a delegate to a meeting in the morning, to discuss tho proposal of further work by an A .C. E. tutor in the County next year. Donations were received from tho Fairton, Lyndlmrst, Cliertsey and Lowcliffe Institutes for the funds of the Federation and from the Tinwald Institute and Dr. G. I. Miller for tho Federation’s Chinese Relief Fund.
The voluntary organisers reported having visited Wakanui, Maronan, Staveley, Ashton-Waterton, Allenton and Hinds'.
Mrs K. McEaclien, Hampstead group convener, was elected to the executive committee.
The president reported on the newlyformed branch of tlic National Council of Women in Christchurch. Morning and afternoon tea were provided b.v Mrs Curtis.
