MEMORIAL SOCIETY.

ACTIVITIES AT HAMPSTEAD. ANNUAL ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The Hampstead Memorial Society held its annual meeting last evening. The president (Mr H. Money) presided. The annual report stated that tho Hampstead Memorial Hall had, been let on 32 evenings and 20 afternoons during the year. The major expenditure was £43 for connection with the sewerage scheme. The sear ended with a small credit balance.' It wa» recommended that the incoming Committee have the interior fittings and the outside woodwork of tho hall attended to For the second time, the society cooperated with the Ashburton East School Committee on a 50-50 basis in holding, a chrysanthemum show. The society benefited, iby about £2o' from this effort. The Anzac Day service at the memorial gates was well attended, and wreaths were sent by the Ashburton East' School, the Hampstead Women’s Institute, the Returned .Soldiers’ Association, the Ashburton Boroligh Council, the County War Relief Association, the( Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and many local residents. During the year the society suffered a severe loss through the death of Mr W. H. Robinson, a foundation member and trustee. Messrs N. G. Corbett and W. Dickson joined the society during the year.

The assets of the Society now exceeded the liabilities by £l9lO, revealed the financial statement. The principal assets were: Hall and fittings £790, swimming bath ana section £650, memorial fence £230. There was a credit balance of £l2 16s 9d.

The following officers were elected*: President, Mr AV. J. Miller; secretary. Mr S. G. Groves; .treasurer, Air H. Money; trustees, Messrs A. Hardy and E. H. Childs; auditor, Air R. H. Loy; committee, Alessrs AV. Thompson, H. AlacLauehlan, C. Dellow, O. A. SpicA-, N. AV. Corbett, H. Dixon, and three representatives on the East Ashburton Swimming Club, Alessrs Aliller, Groyes, and Thompson. Alessrs E. Parkin, F. Johnston, and J. Hunt, sen., were elected life members in appreciation of their work in the early days of the society. It was decided to record appreciation of tho work of the retiring president during the last two years, and a vote of thanks was also passed to the secretary. The balance-sheet of the swimming club showed a credit of £l6. The installation of a pump at a cost of £SO by the club was mentioned, and it was decided to congratulate the club on its progress. At a subsequent committee meeting a letter was received from the Australasian Performing Right Association reducing the annual subscription of the society from 12s 6d, to os, in view of the decrease in revenue from musical entertainment.
