NEW ZEALANDER© IN SYDNEY.
SYDNEY, August 16,
A number of Now Zealand golfers participated: in an 18 holes’ stroke handicap for a special one hundred and fiftieth, anniversary trophy at the Autralian Golf Club, The event afforded valuable practcc for the open championship commencing to-morrow, in \yhieh it is anticipated the best of the New Zealanders will figure very prominently.
To-day’s competition was won by Aliss Hirst (Victoria) with a net 73. Miss Sydney Jones was runner-up with 7-1 (which, is par lor the course), then followed the New Zealanders, Alisses Jean Honvell, Helen Buchanan, P. TTelean, with 76 each.
Other New Zealanders’ net scores were: —Airs R. Fullerton-Smith 78, Aliss B. Rutherford: 79, Aliss J. Hornabrook 87.
Aliss E. Nutt failed to return a card.
Aliss Helean’s 79 was the best gross score, and equalled the course record. Aliss Horwell’s gross 80 was the next best. Airs Fullerton-Smith and Aliss Buchanan each had a gross 82.
A high wind made playing difficult. Aliss Helean was remarkably steady, scoring 13 pars and being one over at each ot the other five holes. But for a couple of duffed tee shots, her score would have been even better.
Aliss Honvell registered 12 pars, but lost strokes at the other holes because of faulty putting. Mrs Fullerton-Smith is hitting all shots crisply, but visits to several
bunkers to-day were costly. She also had lapses on the greens. Mi ss Buchanan had a well-bal-anced card, 41 each way. Mi ssos Rutherford and Ilornabrook, whose gross scores were 8S and 94 respectively, were frequently off the line with tee shots.
