RECORD GATE RECEIPTS. THE INDIAN MATCH AT ASHBURTON. With, a low tickets and: donations yet to bo accounted for it is likely that no financial loss will be sustained as a result of the Indian hockey match in Ashburton. This statement was made by the secretary of the Ashburton Men’s Hockey .Sub-Association (Mr S. M. Cassidy) last evening when the financial shoot of receipts and expenditure wiys presented. The president (Mr A. C. Vincent) who presided, said that even if a small loss was made as a result of the match, this deficit would be more than balanced by the amount- ol good to tiie game locally, that must also result Irom such a visit. The amount taken at the gate on the day of the match was 9s Gel and with the ticket mvney of CIO J9s it was said this represented a record sum for a hockey match in Ashburton. On the invitation of the North Otago Association it was decided to play a match at Waimato on July 30. Each local club will be required to nominate players to take part, and except lor Thistle, which has the bye, nominations will he limited to two.

Mr S. M. Cassidy, who has been secretary to the Association for a number

of "years handed in his resignation last evening and in wishing hockey a prosperous future in the County, j.resented a handsome silver cup to the Association for the junior grade competition. The trophy will be named the Cassidy C up. Mr Cassidy was appointed a life member of the Association in recognition of his services.

The president spoke highly ol Mr Cassidy’s work while with the Association and stated that the satisfactory position of its finances was due, in no small measure, to his efficient handling in the past. Mr Vincent made special mention to the manner in which Mr Cassidy had arranged the Indian match. The president’s remaiks were endorsed by Messrs H. Fawke and C. Bishop. It was decided to hold a local five-a-siclo tournament for juniors and seniors on August 13. A collection wiil he taken that day to raise funds to help the Ashburton Women's Association send a representative team to Gisborne. On September 10 a hoys’ five-a-sicle competition will be conducted. It was agreed to write to the Canterbury Association inviting it to play three primary school and two senior matches at Ashburton or Christchurch on either August 27, September 3 or September 17.

ENGLISH WOMEN #EAT BUSH. EKETAHUNA, July 18. The touring English women’s hockey team decisively beat the Bush women’s representative team at Eketahuna today, before a large number of spectators, who saw a clever display by the visitors. The weather kept fine, hut the ground was rather heavy. Nevertheless, play was fast and interesting.
